Ever have a colored clip art image or color photo that you would really want in line art? Well, here is a super simple way to change a colored image into line art using Photoshop in just a few steps. You will be utilizing Photoshop's filters and tools to change your image into something that looks like it was drawn by hand. There are several ways to transform a color clip art image or photograph into something different, but we are focusing on turning the image into line art that looks hand drawn. The first thing you should do is fine a suitable clip art image or photograph that you would like to transform.

We have found this colored photograph of a clock with buildings in the background on iClipart.com. The bold edges on the clock, along with the details on the buildings, make this a great image to turn into line art.

Open your saved image in Photoshop, then select Layer > Duplicate Layer.

Next, select Image > Adjustments > Desaturate. This will turn the image black and white.

An optional step, but we find it works well with most images. Select Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Keep the setting at 1.0

Next go Filter > Stylize > Find Edges. Now it looks like a pencil drawing.

Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast. Adjust to your liking. Then Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen More.

And there you have it, the finished product of our color photograph turned into line art. Wasn't that simple? These easy steps only took a matter of a few minutes at most. Remember, the same method applies to color clip art images as well.

You can also adjust the amount of color in your line art if desired. Just adjust the opacity of the duplicate layer to add a little bit of color into the line art image, for more of a cartoon look. Here is our example of this below.
